Startup electric car company Aurica Motors announced a plan to keep the NUMMI plant, which employs 4,700 people, from shutting down when Toyota leaves on 31 March. Aurica is trying to obtain Federal economic stimulus funding to convert NUMMI to electric car manufacturing, but is also open to private financing.

International Battery (IB), a US manufacturer and developer of large-format lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, has been chosen as the battery system provider for the first-of-its-kind Community Energy Storage (CES) systems, developed by S&C Electric Company for American Electric Power (AEP).

PwC has released the first edition of the “Charging Forward: Electric Vehicle Survey”, which it developed to provide a check-up on some of the major determining factors for the success of EVs in the near-, mid- and long-term. Solar comes in third at 19.4%, followed by Other (18.9%) and nuclear (11.4%). Source: PwC.

I write a column for the Electric Auto Association newsletter, Current EVents. Plug-in cars are inevitable. Nissan appears intent on opening up a market for mid-price range electric cars within two years. The other carmakers domestic and foreign have less firm but well press-released plans for plug-ins.

All the more reason you should be going solar and produce your own clean, green energy instead of paying the electric company.

We noted in December that the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, was working to update standards for the interface between plug-in electric cars and the grid, and planned to agree on a set within months. And for this ecosystem to be robust, there must be commonality, especially when owners are plugging into the electrical grid.
