A research team at the University of Wisconsin–Madison has identified a new way to convert ammonia to nitrogen gas through a process that could be a step toward ammonia replacing carbon-based fuels. For a fuel cell, we want an electrical output, not input. It’s compressible, like propane, easy to transport and easy to store.

The researchers compared the sensitivity of range and fuel economy to the level of electrification, battery specific energy density, and electric motor power density. Jet fuel and aviation gasoline are easy to store on an airplane. The same sensitivities were studied with a series hybrid-electric drivetrain.
