Aurica is trying to obtain Federal economic stimulus funding to convert NUMMI to electric car manufacturing, but is also open to private financing. The batteries can be recharged either by plugging into the grid, or exchanged in 3 minutes for a battery charged with renewable energy at an Aurica Power Exchange Package (PEP) swapping station.

GE has been exploring a “dual-battery” concept—optimized power and energy storage systems—with Chrysler for plug-in vehicles under a DOE-funded project. The vans themselves are based on the concept Town and Country EV that was unveiled last Fall by Chrysler. However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept.
