Sandia team puts power into local grid with supercritical CO2 closed-loop Brayton-cycle turbine

Green Car Congress

Sandia National Laboratories researchers recently delivered electricity produced by a new power-generating system to the Sandia-Kirtland Air Force Base electrical grid. In comparison, the Brayton cycle has a theoretical conversion efficiency upwards of 50%. It took us a long time to get the data needed to let us connect to the grid.

EU Innovation Fund grants €108M to RWE’s waste-to-hydrogen project FUREC

For comparison: This is equivalent to the output of a 700-megawatt offshore wind farm with coupled electrolyzers. The CO 2 released during the hydrogen production is captured and can be stored or possibly used as a raw material by industry in the future. The plant is expected to produce 54,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

The EV Transition Explained: Can the Grid Cope?

Cars That Think

There have been vigorous debates pro and con in the United States and elsewhere over whether electric grids can support EVs at scale. In comparison, the state’s goal is to achieve this amount by 2050. As energy expert Chris Nelder noted at a National Academy EV workshop , “vehicle-to-grid is not really a thing, at least not yet.

New PNNL zinc-polyiodide redox flow battery offers 2x energy density of next-best system; potential for mobile applications

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have developed a new zinc-polyiodide redox flow battery offering more than two times the energy density of the next-best flow battery used to store renewable energy and support the power grid. Hoses were connected between the vials, a pump and a small stack.

The environmental impact of electric cars

Drive Electric

The UK also hopes to connect more and more EVs to the electricity grid to share power at peak times, in something called vehicle to grid charging (V2G). This will allow the grid to draw renewable energy from cars and vans which are plugged in, with their batteries replenished when energy is cleaner at off-peak times.

Researchers call for integration of materials sustainability into battery research; the need for in situ monitoring

Green Car Congress

We need new storage technologies if more renewables are to be used on the electrical grid; similarly, the electrification of transport requires much cheaper and longer-lasting batteries. The size of these batteries (in comparison to those used for portable electronics) places severe pressure on materials resources. Click to enlarge.

OSU smart membrane could enable new category of high-energy, high-power energy storage for EVs

Green Car Congress

The shelf-life of stored charge in rechargeable devices does not scale linearly with maximum SP and has led to trends referred to as ‘range-anxiety’, ‘compulsive charging’, etc. Comparison of commercially available electric vehicles driving range to recharge time (min) (for a full recharge), abbreviated as MPM (and for use akin to MPG).
