AQLI: new data reveals little progress globally in reducing air pollution over the last two decades

Green Car Congress

With growth in coal consumption in Africa over the next two decades projected to be triple what it was in the past two decades, recognizing particulate pollution as a possible growing problem becomes even more important.

IEA finds CO2 emissions flat for third straight year even as global economy grew in 2016

This was the result of growing renewable power generation, switches from coal to natural gas, improvements in energy efficiency, as well as structural changes in the global economy. The decline was driven by a surge in shale gas supplies and more attractive renewable power that displaced coal. Coal demand fell worldwide but the drop was particularly sharp in the United States, where demand was down 11% in 2016.

Global CO2 emissions stalled for the third year in a row

Emissions are increasing in other developing countries: 6% for Indonesia and Malaysia; 9% for Pakistan and 12% for the Philippines. CH 4 is mainly generated by agricultural activities, the production of coal and gas, as well as waste treatment and disposal. The annual assessment of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the JRC and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) confirms that CO 2 emissions have stalled for the third year in a row.

Yet the period since 2009 has also witnessed decreases in Chinese coal consumption that underpin a levelling off of global CO 2 emissions, as well as the forging of the Paris Agreement whereby nations are determining their contributions to the global effort to reduce COCO 2 2 emissions. The success of international climate mitigation efforts may therefore depend on curtailing growth of coal-based energy and emissions in now-industrialising and urbanising countries.

Avoiding new coal-fired power plants and accelerated phasing out of existing plants—while ensuring careful handling of issues such as employment, investor interests and grid stability—would help the emissions picture. There are an estimated 6,683 operating coal-fired power plants in the world, with a combined capacity of 1,964 GW. In early 2017, an additional 273 GW of coal-fired capacity was under construction and 570 GW in pre-construction.

Seven measures target CH 4 emissions, covering coal mining, oil and gas production, long-distance gas transmission, municipal waste and landfills, wastewater, livestock manure, and rice paddies. Iran, Pakistan and Jordan would experience the most improvement in agricultural production. National benefits of the CH 4 plus BC measures versus the reference scenario.
