Global CO2 emissions stalled for the third year in a row

Emissions are increasing in other developing countries: 6% for Indonesia and Malaysia; 9% for Pakistan and 12% for the Philippines. Information on the other two greenhouse gases, methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O), is only available until 2012, as international statistics on agricultural activities—the main source of these emissions—are not updated as frequently as on energy and industry-related activities.

New phase of globalization could undermine efforts to reduce CO2 emissions

Yet the period since 2009 has also witnessed decreases in Chinese coal consumption that underpin a levelling off of global CO 2 emissions, as well as the forging of the Paris Agreement whereby nations are determining their contributions to the global effort to reduce COCO 2 2 emissions. The success of international climate mitigation efforts may therefore depend on curtailing growth of coal-based energy and emissions in now-industrialising and urbanising countries.

UN Environment report says national GHG pledges only bring one-third of reductions needed for Paris Agreement

Given currently available carbon budget estimates, the available global carbon budget for 1.5 ˚C C target is 16 to 19 GtCO 2 e, higher than previous estimates as new studies have become available. Avoiding new coal-fired power plants and accelerated phasing out of existing plants—while ensuring careful handling of issues such as employment, investor interests and grid stability—would help the emissions picture.

International study identifies 14 key measures to reduce methane and black carbon emissions; reduction in projected global mean warming of ~0.5 °C by 2050

The model estimated potential worldwide emissions reductions of particulate and gaseous species on the basis of available real-world data on reduction efficiencies of these measures where they have been applied already and examined the impact of full implementation everywhere by 2030. Seven measures target CH 4 emissions, covering coal mining, oil and gas production, long-distance gas transmission, municipal waste and landfills, wastewater, livestock manure, and rice paddies.

MIT and IEA reports take different views of the future of natural gas in transportation

More than 70% of all NGVs and one-half of all fuelling stations can be found in just five countries: Pakistan, Iran, Argentina, Brazil and India. They also emit less CO 2 per km than EVs in China, because of heavy reliance there on coal to produce electricity. The IEA expects the uptake of NGVs to remain limited unless there is a significant increase in the availability of refuelling infrastructure.
