Electric vehicles charged in coal-heavy regions can create more human health and environmental damages from life cycle air emissions than gasoline vehicles, according to a new consequential life cycle analysis by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University. UC stands for uncontrolled charging and CC stands for controlled charging.

At that point, the internal combustion engine kicks in and recharges the battery while you are driving. But I can’t help thinking that this technology will make the current crop of hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape look like Ford Excursions. The Volt is the plug-in hybrid car GM showed at last January’s Detroit Auto Show.

A senior Toyota engineer told the Monitor early last year the company had little interest. On Tuesday, the president of Toyota's North American subsidiary, Jim Press, said the company is looking at developing a plug-in vehicle that can "travel greater distances without using its gas engine."

Of the fossil fuel subsidies, $70.2billion went to traditional sources such as coal and oil with just $2.3billion dedicated to carbon capture and storage, which is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By contrast, the hybrid Prius is almost 0.42miles per MJ. Why is so much money dedicated to fossil fuels?
