Thanks in large part to Mayor "Red Ken" Livingstone, who enacted London's much criticized congestion charge policy in 2003. To facilitate these EVs, Charging stations are being put in place by local councils, making even short range electric cars viable for commuters. NiMH is the risk-free pathway.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. Perhaps Toyota’s battery division is having problems. Perhaps Toyota, as hybrid leader, doesn’t want to get too far out front.

Engineers from CSIRO modified Toyota Prius vehicles, removing the OEM battery pack and instead installing a larger 6kWh, 30Ah NiMH battery pack with five times the capacity of the original. This, alongside a battery charger, allows the cars to plug into and charge with electricity from the grid or from on-site renewable energy sources.

The acceleration was significantly better than my RAV, no doubt due to the Li-Ion battery pack weighing about 400-500 lbs less than the Toyota’s NiMH pack. The choice of these locations has to do with their roll out of a charging infrastructure. I was very impressed with the ride.

Toyota has released more detail on the powertrain of the new Lexus CT 200h premium compact dedicated hybrid ( earlier post ); Toyota plans to introduce it to the US market in early 2011. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system’s 202V NIMH battery allows the new CT 200h to operate in EV mode, driving under electric motor power alone.
