In June 2021, DHL Freight started piloting a Bio-LNG solution (Bio-Liquefied Natural Gas from sustainable biomass) with Shell on three haulier trucks to reduce CO 2 emissions in road freight transport for DHL’s customer Grundfos. The logistics industry is currently responsible for 11 percent of global carbon emissions.

In a paper published in the journal Energy Policy , the team suggests that more effective policies would evaluate fuels at the refinery level, thereby creating incentives for GHG emissions to be lowered through competition as low GHG emission fuels have higher economic value to blenders. Refiners are improving efficiency.

The researchers hope to test the technology using Mack trucks from Westcan’s fleet, traveling Alberta Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary—a distance of about 300 km (186 miles). DME offers performance that is similar to diesel, making it suited for fleets that have to haul heavy loads. DME is a gas under ambient conditions.
