The Abfallentsorgungs-Gesellschaft Ruhrgebiet mbH ( AGR ), a waste management company in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has put a converted DAF CF 340 hydrogen fuel cell truck into operation as part of the EU-funded HECTOR (Hydrogen Waste Collection Vehicles in North West Europe) project.

The €200-million Steelanol project is a first of its kind for the European steel industry. It will reduce annual carbon emissions from the Ghent plant by 125,000 tonnes.

PowerCell Sweden AB will participate in an EU project that will develop and operate a refuse truck with fuel cells for Renova AB, western Sweden’s leading environmental enterprise within recycling and waste management. This project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement Nº 779589.

The strategy is centred around two main technology routes, as introduced in the first ArcelorMittal Europe climate action report published earlier this year: The use of hydrogen in DRI-EAF (Direct Reduced Iron - Electric Arc Furnace) and, also, the blast furnace. Rolls-Royce has approved its mtu Kinetic PowerPacks, based on the mtu Series 4000 and 1600 diesel engines, for use with renewable diesel (HVO/Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) and the other synthetic diesel fuels of the EN15940 standard. The systems performed the same with HVO as with fossil diesel.
