The Rice lab of chemist James Tour has developed anodes comprising porous carbon made from asphalt that showed exceptional stability after more than 500 charge-discharge cycles. These mossy deposits invade a battery’s electrolyte. The lab combined the anode with a sulfurized-carbon cathode to make full batteries for testing.

Since the batteries now have the capacity to last the entire 45-minute race distance, the mandatory car change during the race has been eliminated. Afterwards, the race cars and equipment will be transported to Saudi Arabia. All Formula E teams draw electricity from identical McLaren batteries weighing 374 kilograms.
