Almost 98% of all these trucks run on diesel, according to the 2021 Vehicles in Use report. Just some 2,300—or 0.04% of the total fleet—are zero-emission trucks. To make zero-emission trucks the preferred choice of transport operators, urgent action is needed on European and member state levels, ACEA said.

The FLIRT Akku vehicles are designed to replace the current diesel fleet and will enable sustainable operation on lines that are only partially electrified. They are intended for use in the eastern region in Austria, where they will replace the current diesel fleet. The vehicle has an operating range of around 100 kilometers.

The ICCT reports that 11,000 zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles were sold in Europe in 2023, more than double the number sold in 2022, and that 18% of all buses and coaches sold in the EU in 2023 were electric. In Germany, Austria and Belgium, by contrast, diesel buses still made up 75% of new bus sales.

Battery electric cars emit less greenhouse gases and air pollutants over their entire life cycle than petrol and diesel cars, according to a European Environment Agency (EEA) report. Emissions are usually higher in the production phase of electric cars, but these are more than offset by lower emissions in the use phase over time.
