The LCFS program calls for a 10% reduction in the carbon intensity of fuel sold in California over the next decade. Obligated parties are upstream producers and importers of gasoline and diesel fuel sold in the state. The program is agnostic as to which fuels can be used to meet the Standard.

Switching from diesel fuel to natural gas may hold advantages for the US heavy-duty trucking fleet, but more needs to be done to reach the full environmental benefits, according to a new white paper released by the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis, and Rice University.

Harmonizing fuel programs between state, federal, and foreign jurisdictions is useful to ensure the optimum reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, suppliers will be required to report on the lifecycle GHG emissions of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, and gas-oil) they supply and reduce these emissions from 2011 onward.

The anaerobic digester system that will be used was developed as a pilot project at the University of California, Davis. The project will evaluate the potential of several plant materials, and production processes, including installation and testing of equipment. New equipment will be fabricated in Marysville, in Yuba County.
