US President Barack Obama today announced a new harmonized national policy intended to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for all new cars and trucks sold in the US. The resulting new standards will cover model years 2012-2016, and will require an average fuel economy standard of 35.5

The majority of the emissions and fuel savings from current vehicles, EPA noted, is due to new gasoline vehicle technologies. MY 2012 adjusted fuel economy is 23.6 mpg higher (+5.4%) than MY 2011. mpg fuel economy improvement from MY 2011 to MY 2012 is the second largest annual improvement in the last 30 years.

Further, the fossil fuel share of primary energy consumption falls from 82% in 2011 to 78% in 2040 as consumption of petroleum-based liquid fuels falls, largely because of the incorporation of new fuel efficiency standards for light-duty vehicles. Renewable fuel use grows at a much faster rate than fossil fuel use.
