Hybrids take 7% of California market in 1H 2013; PHEVs 0.7%; EVs 1.1%

Hybrid vehicle market share (excluding plug-in hybrids) in California increased to 7% in the first half of 2013, up from 6.2% in 2012, according to the California Auto Outlook for the second quarter of 2013. For the first six months of 2013, hybrid registrations (excluding plug-ins), were 59,300 units; plug-in hybrids, 5,736 units; and battery electric vehicles, 9,708 units. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicle share of the California retail market.

By comparison, Fuel Economy is the top priority for Volt, LEAF and Prius Plug-In owners (97%, 94% and 98%, respectively). The plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt, in electric mode, is EPA-rated at 35 kWh/100 miles; the C-MAX and Fusion Energi PHEVs is electric mode are EPA-rated at 34 kWh/100 miles; and the Prius PHV is EPA-rated at 29 kWh/ 100 miles, as is the 2014 Honda Accord PHEV.).

Its efforts to incorporate alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) into its fleet began in 2002 with an initial purchase of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), mainly the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape hybrid. In 2010, the city converted 15 Toyota Prius hybrids to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The city equipped 50 EV, PHEV and HEV vehicles with Zipcar’s Fast Fleet wireless technology, enabling employees to reserve available vehicles in the fleet pool.

Prius PHV top-selling PHEV in UK in 2012 with 470 units

Toyota’s Prius PHV was the best-selling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in the UK in 2012, achieving 470 sales from its launch date in July 2012 and outselling its nearest rival, the Vauxhall Ampera, despite it being on sale 3 months longer than the Toyota. In 2012, the hybrid range in the UK expanded from two to five vehicles: Yaris Hybrid, 7-seat Prius+ and Prius Plug-in were added to the existing Prius and Auris Hybrid.

EPA rates Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid with 620-mile range, 21 in EV mode

In a presentation at the SAE 2017 Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technologies Symposium in San Diego last week, Brett Hinds, Chief Engineer, Electrified Powertrain Engineering, Ford Motor Company, said that using the embedded modem in Ford PHEVs and BEVs, the company has collected (as part of the MyFord Mobile service), from 2013 through now, data from 35,185 unique vehicles over more than 80.6 PHEV customers aren’t self-selecting themselves.
