In absolute numbers, 152,323 fewer diesel cars were sold. This drop was offset by an increase in the sale of gasoline engined vehicles. Automakers are cautioning that this shift to gasoline engines—with their higher CO 2 values—will pose additional challenges to meeting future CO 2 reduction targets.

Finding ways of recovering this lost heat energy has been one of the major goals being pursued by engineers working on BMW EfficientDynamics for the future. The BMW turbosteamer is based on this two-stage stationary power generation method, but reduced in scale and design to form a component that can be used in modern automobile engines.

BMW dedicated a portion of its recent Innovation Days 2009 event to the topic of Intelligent Heat management as a mechanism for reducing fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. BMW engineers are working on largely avoiding cold start conditions through intelligent heat management and significantly shortening the warm-up period.
