The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has launched a new campaign encouraging Londoners to turn off their engines when their vehicle is stationary for more than a minute. The campaign is part of a package of measures to improve air quality, cut harmful pollution and clean up the city ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

UK Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has committed an additional £5 million (US$8 million) funding to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to help improve air quality in the capital. The funding is for a program of localized measures designed to improve London’s air quality and help compliance with legally binding European targets.

The city won't have as much trouble beating Beijing's pollution levels though, which is why London is claiming its games will be the "greenest ever".

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the regulatory authority for international shipping, decided to implement a global sulfur cap of 0.50% m/m (mass/mass) (5,000 ppm) on fuel oil starting 1 January 2020 during its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), meeting for its 70 th session in London.
