Maritime traffic on the world’s oceans has increased four-fold over the past 20 years, likely causing more water, air and noise pollution on the open seas, according to a new study quantifying global ship traffic. The number of ships traversing the oceans grew by 60% between 1992 and 2002.

For people looking for the most effective way to end our addiction to oil, PHEVs have made sense because carmakers can build them now, with todays technology and using todays infrastructure. But theyve needed definitive proof that PHEVs wont increase pollution. These are "features" -- and no one asks about the payback.

My ex and I got solar at home on his birthday in 2002, then our first EV, the RAV4, a couple months later, on the winter solstice. No pollution, well-to-wheels. The World Health Organization estimates that some seven million people die every year from polluted air. And with the solar panels, I was driving on sunshine. .
