In 2001, a team of engineers at a then-obscure R&D company called AC Propulsion quietly began a groundbreaking experiment. They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G.

A UPS-led consortium has deployed new smart-grid charging technology in London that overcomes the challenge of simultaneously recharging an entire fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) without the need for the expensive upgrade to the power supply grid. A key part of this initiative is the use of onsite energy storage batteries.

SolarCity points out that the utility grid is aging and outages are increasing. Elon Musk is the Chairman of Solar City, and Chairman and CEO of Tesla Motors.

Johnson Controls will provide its Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) advanced lead-acid battery technology to power the Chery Jaguar Land Rover Start-Stop and other vehicles made in China to serve the China market. Start-Stop systems help reduce fuel consumption as the engine shuts off when the vehicle comes to a stop in traffic or at a red light.

Taking legal action over the ZEV mandates would be a repeat of the late 1990s: automakers filed a federal lawsuit that led California to water down its ZEV requirements beginning in 2001, thus effectively ending most automakers electric vehicle (EV) programs for more than a decade.
