From 2000 to 2010, China’s energy use grew 130%, up from a growth of 50% the previous decade. China’s share of global energy-related CO 2 emissions has increased in just eight years from 14% in 2000 to 22% in 2008. Eighty percent of those emissions came from coal, making China the consumer of about half the world’s coal.

The idea is to replace the blast furnaces with an alternative process, using hydrogen produced from “clean” electricity. The specific investment and operating costs of direct reduction plants are low compared to integrated steel plants and are more suitable for many developing countries where supplies of coking coal are limited.

When I got back from Japan in 2000 I didn’t want to start a computer business. In 2000 there couldn’t have been too many old timers in the solar industry. THE HOLY GRAIL OF SOLAR: $3 A WATT, CHEAPER THAN COAL. And at sub $3 you’re cheaper than coal. Some generator is burning coal out there in Arizona.

The EV battery start-up company SPARKZ is going to fill its worker needs in its planned West Virginia plant by recruiting and retraining laid off coal miners. How much the coal miners will earn in wages and benefits in comparison to what they previously did will be interesting to watch. Whether they are a good idea is debatable.
