Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) has signed a new contract with Havyard Ship Technology, Leirvik for the delivery of hybrid electric systems for three new ferries owned by Norway`s largest ferry company Fjord1. Diesel engines, capable of pure biodiesel operation, will be installed as well, enabling hybrid and plug-in hybrid operation.

Norway now has two swap stations in operation, and Nio claims it will have 20 swap stations across Europe in countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden by the end of this year. This is a unique feature of battery swapping stations that could be exploited in the future to make them act as grid-support units.

While Norway voiced its intention to end the sales of new ICE vehicles by 2025, Germany, Sweden, India, China, among other countries, seek to ban the sales of ICE vehicles from 2030. In fact, 27 million of consumer and 1 million of commercial Plug-In Electric Vehicles (PEV) will be sold by 2030. —Maite Bezerra.

In recent testimony, Nuvve CEO Gregory Poilasne told the lawmakers that bidirectional charging can reduce the total cost of EV ownership, and that it’s essential for integrating more renewable energy into the grid. Then it takes the DC from the bus, or car, and converts it back to AC to provide power for the grid. That’s one way.

Grid congestion is imminent If we look at the big picture, EV charging only accounts for about 4% of total demand for electricity; not something for utilities to be alarmed about. Countries like the Netherlands and Norway are front-runners for EV adoption in Europe. In June 2023, plug-in car sales reached 45% in the Netherlands.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles, when driven on electric power for most trips, have lifecycle emissions similar to battery electric vehicles. In markets with very low-carbon electricity, such as Norway or France, electric vehicles produce less than a third of the life-cycle emissions of an average combustion-engine vehicle.
