In Germany, all Mercedes-Benz plants will be supplied with CO 2 -neutral energy. From 2022, the production of our Mercedes-Benz plants in Germany will operate CO 2 -neutral. Today, new plants in Europe are already planned with a CO2-neutral energy supply from the start. The decision also fits with our overall strategy.

bp and thyssenkrupp Steel have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on the development of long-term supply of low-carbon hydrogen and renewable power in steel production, helping accelerate the steel industry’s wider energy transition. Steel accounts for 8 to 11% of global CO 2 emissions.

At the same time, the Group is aiming to secure the supply of battery cells beyond 2025. Volkswagen is also vigorously pursuing expansion of the public fast-charging network globally. Together with partners, we want to have a total of six cell factories up and running in Europe by 2030 thus guaranteeing security of supply.

Eguana designed the package around LG Chem’s battery modules and supplies its Bi-Direx inverter and controls subassembly. The low voltage design enables high-capacity batteries to operate in lower power ratings needed for decentralized systems (i.e. Eguana has also worked with Germany-based Sonnenbatterie on a similar ESS solution.

The Audi e-gas plant in the city of Werlte in Lower Saxony ( earlier post ) produces CO 2 neutral-fuel (synthetic methane from water, renewable electricity and CO 2 ); it now also contributes toward stabilizing the public power grid. This therefore considerably increases the overall efficiency of the Power-to-Gas/biogas plant.

And Germany isn’t the only country investing in hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen is thus greasing the wheels of the global transition to cleaner energy. In 2021, global hydrogen demand was 94 million tonnes, most of it used in refining and in chemical industries. And the world is going to need a lot more of it.
