Royal Dutch Shell plc will proceed with its Carmon Creek project in Alberta, Canada, expected to produce up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day. At Carmon Creek, the design includes a novel well delivery system and the use of cogeneration that will also feed power into the Alberta grid; enough to power half a million homes.

The hydrogen is currently produced as a byproduct of the refining process or through natural gas reforming; electrolysis instead uses electricity to split water into the base components of hydrogen and oxygen. The plant will produce power by converting sub-bituminous coal into hydrogen-rich synthesis gas (syngas) and CO 2. The syngas and high-quality steam will be fed to the combined-cycle combustion and steam turbine generator to produce electricity. About 200 megawatts of electricity will be put on the power grid.
