Its hybrid electric and hydrogen powertrain aims to reduce downtime related to energy recharging while reducing the carbon footprint, including the battery. The 40 kWh battery is recyclable and will be made in France by 2024 at the Renault ElectriCity Gigafactory. The fuel cell tank is made of carbon fiber from recycled paper waste.

ACC is constructing Gigafactories in France and Germany and recently announced plans for a third Gigafactory in Italy. Umicore commissioned its greenfield plant in Nysa—the first cathode materials plant in Europe—in 2021. The plant will start commercial production in the second quarter of 2022 and will employ 400 people.

Umicore, a global materials technology group, is a pioneer in the recycling of rechargeable batteries; its battery recycling plant in Hoboken, Belgium, has an annual capacity of 7,000 tons of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and battery production scrap, the equivalent of 35,000 electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
