Average carbon dioxide emissions per kilometer continue to fall in Europe, according to preliminary figures released by the European Environment Agency (EEA). In the EU, CO 2 emissions from road transport have increased by 23% between 1990 and 2010, becoming responsible for approximately one fifth of the EU’s total emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions increased in the EU in 2010 as a result of both economic recovery in many countries after the 2009 recession and a colder winter, according to the latest greenhouse gas inventory published by the European Environment Agency (EEA). Spain, Greece and Portugal again reported lower GHG emissions in 2010.

The European Community’s air pollutant emission inventory report released by the European Environment Agency finds that in 2007, sulphur oxides (SO x ) emissions were down by 72 % from 1990 levels. In Europe, a new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) found that the average car sold in the EU in 2012 was 9% more fuel-efficient than the average three years before, due to improved technology and an increase in the share of diesel cars.
