International Battery (IB), a US manufacturer and developer of large-format lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, has been chosen as the battery system provider for the first-of-its-kind Community Energy Storage (CES) systems, developed by S&C Electric Company for American Electric Power (AEP). The requirements for CES are very demanding.

NSWC Crane and AeroVironment have developed a CRADA project with the BIC designed to develop and demonstrate a large grid array battery test and evaluation capability that will be used for evaluation of future microgrid technologies. In addition, the BIC has significant government partners including NSWC Crane and Argonne National Lab.

Among the findings of the survey: Approximately one-third (33.8%) of respondents felt the lack of investment to modernize the grid is a primary roadblock preventing the widespread support of EVs. 19% of those surveyed indicated the government should bear the primary burden of developing and funding an EV infrastructure or smart grid.

These three leading international energy markets illustrate how progress is being made in other major energy-intensive nations, but they are not alone. The automotive industry is living proof that private companies will rarely change their behaviors without a significant stimulus to that change, and furthermore one that needs to be mandated.
