A researcher at The University of Texas at Austin will receive two grants totaling $15 million to study switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum ), with a focus on how it can become a sustainable source of bioenergy. Additionally, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a four-year grant of $4 million to Juenger and his team.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has selected eight projects to negotiate for up to $15 million in total DOE funding to optimize integrated biorefineries. Currently, the syrup content is used for biogas production and as the solid fuel for boilers. These products will generate revenue for IBRs and help lower the fuel cost from these facilities.

Suppliers will be required to gradually reduce GHG emissions per unit of energy by up to 10% in 2020. BC is participating in federal development of sustainability criteria in Canada.
