In was eager to get the new DC-DC converter installed so I left work a bit early and got to work so I could still drive the car to breakfast with my girlfriend tomorrow morning. Here's the mostly final installation. The DC-DC converter fits rather nicely in the old space. The new converter is dead silent.

The standard unit of electrical power is the watt, which is defined as a current of one ampere, at a voltage of one volt. More simply, volts x amps = watts. In the UK, the standard wall socket delivers 240 volts. In March 2020 we installed 9 solar panels an inverter and 2 battery packs. Power is watts. Octopus Go.

In the process, the DC-DC converter turned on (indicated by red LED) and then slowly decayed to the off state. Since the positive terminal of the auxiliary battery is tied to the unswitched 12V rail, the negative terminal of the battery is at zero volts. We need this here to install the charger mount next. The moment of truth!

The PCU features a compact inverter design with direct cooling of IGBT transistors, and converts DC to 3-phase AC to drive MG1 and MG2. Controlled by the hybrid ECU, the PCU boost converter raises 201.6 VDC up to 650 volts DC. The compact Li-ion battery pack is installed under the rear luggage area.

The XL1 is not a product of any of Volkswagen’s modular Baukästen (assembly kits such as the MQB, MLB or MSB, earlier post ). Nonetheless, some of the learnings from the XL1 will flow back to inform the evolution of the different kits, such as to the MQB which has its own plug-in hybrid powertrain, to make its debut in the A3.

One of the other 914 kit converters questioned why the accessory battery couldn't stay in the original tray, but I decided to remove it anyway and have the accessory battery up in the front trunk near the DC/DC converter. Next up: installing two-wire cable for the backup switch and potbox to keep things looking nice.

They convert Toyota Prius hybrids into mostly electric vehicles that get 100 to 150 miles per gallon.
