NREL study finds high-pressure hydrogen pipeline system could potentially make hydrogen cost-competitive with gasoline

Green Car Congress

A new study by a team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) concludes that a high-pressure, scalable, intra-city hydrogen pipeline system could improve the economics and logistics of hydrogen delivery, making it potentially cost-competitive with gasoline. The smallest modeled system connects eight existing stations.

NREL researchers capture excess photon energy to produce solar fuels; higher efficiency water-splitting for H2

Green Car Congress

Using quantum dots (QD) and a process called Multiple Exciton Generation (MEG), the NREL researchers were able to push the peak external quantum efficiency for hydrogen generation to 114%. Photogenerated holes oxidize sulfide in one compartment while electrons reduce hydrogen in the other compartment at the dark Pt cathode.

Study suggests energy and GHG impacts of synthetic hydrocarbon fuels from CO2 are greater than impacts of existing hydrocarbon fuels

Green Car Congress

That the costs of carbon capture can be offset by producing valuable fuels or chemical products from CO 2. Data for diesel, GTL, ethanol, BTL and solar hydrogen cannot be divided into the uptake of CO 2 and connected processes and are therefore aggregated. R indicates reference alternatives not explicitly modeled in this study.

Charged EVs

If you don’t build something like that, people can’t refer to it. In order to get half a megawatt to the supermarket down the street, they had to trench, they had to make the connection, they had to make sure they had enough generation, they had to serve that site. That cost is spread among all ratepayers for that utility.
