Twelve produces first batch of E-Jet fuel from CO2 electrolysis; partnership with USAF; electrifying fuel, not planes

Green Car Congress

Twelve’s jet fuel, produced using its carbon transformation technology in partnership with Fischer-Tropsch conversion experts Emerging Fuels Technology ( earlier post ), is a fossil-free fuel that offers a drop-in replacement for petrochemical-based alternatives without any changes to existing plane design or commercial regulations.

NREL researchers capture excess photon energy to produce solar fuels; higher efficiency water-splitting for H2

Green Car Congress

Using quantum dots (QD) and a process called Multiple Exciton Generation (MEG), the NREL researchers were able to push the peak external quantum efficiency for hydrogen generation to 114%. Photogenerated holes oxidize sulfide in one compartment while electrons reduce hydrogen in the other compartment at the dark Pt cathode.

Study suggests energy and GHG impacts of synthetic hydrocarbon fuels from CO2 are greater than impacts of existing hydrocarbon fuels

Green Car Congress

In the study, the team called fuels produced by the conversion of CO 2 into liquid hydrocarbon fuels using proven technologies “synthetic fuels”, and fuels produced via a production route that uses solar energy “solar fuels”. R indicates reference alternatives not explicitly modeled in this study. —van der Giesen et al.

Photo-activated catalyst converts CO2 to CO for clean fuel technology; no unwanted byproducts

Green Car Congress

We show a near 100 percent selectivity of CO production, with no detection of competing gas products like hydrogen or methane. In chemistry, reduction refers to the gain of electrons in a reaction, while oxidation is when an atom loses electrons. That’s a big deal. —Haimei Zheng. Click to enlarge.

On the road to solar fuels and chemicals

Green Car Congress

This motivates the development of sustainable processes to generate fuels and chemical feedstocks from water and CO 2 using solar energy; such a process is analogous to photosynthesis in nature and is sometimes referred to as artificial photosynthesis. —Montoya et al. Even the best OER catalysts have overpotentials of 0.3 Joseph H.

SwRI D-EGR gasoline demo vehicle delivers diesel efficiency at lower cost; potential for LEV III/Tier 3 emissions

Green Car Congress

In their paper, the SwRI researchers reported that the conversion to D-EGR improved engine efficiency and fuel consumption at least 10% across the performance map, with some operating conditions seeing substantially higher improvements. With D-EGR, one or more cylinders have their exhaust connected directly to the intake system.

The bore electrode is the core part of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell, and the middle is A layer of deep pores, (proton exchange membrane) such. The membrane does not conduct electrons and is an excellent conductor of hydrogen ions. They are among the most efficient fuel cells, with the potential to reach 70%. (2)
