The US Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is working with Ecopetrol, the largest oil company in Colombia, to process the residue from sugar cane and palm oil harvesting into fuel ethanol for blending with gasoline. The plant spoils quickly if the sugars aren’t squeezed out.

At its palm oil factory, ABC will digest organic matter contained in factory wastewater to generate biogas, which will be subsequently refined by Osaka Gas into methane gas. The company says it is capable of producing high purity methane gas with the world’s highest efficiency in methane recovery at a rate of more than 99%.

Novozymes has developed a fungus that enables production of malic acid from renewable raw materials instead of oil. Novozymes is now out-licensing the technology to partners who are interested in producing and commercializing malic acid and derivatives made from renewable raw materials instead of oil.

The emissions further drop to ~70% if we consider 2G ethanol which is produced using farm waste. Ethanol production from farm waste such as corn cob, rice husk, wheat straw and sugarcane bagasse, is known as second generation ethanol (2G). India has already started setting up 2G plants, which use crop waste for ethanol production.

The LCFS requires oil producers, importers and other fuel providers gradually to reduce, on a full-fuel lifecycle basis, the carbon intensity (CI) of their transportation fuel mix (measured in gCO 2 e/MJ) by from 0.25% in 2011 to 10% by 2020. Some small amount of corn oil (about 3% of total co-product) is also produced. gCO 2 e/MJ.
