It looks like the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator are dumping their hybrid trims for the 2024 model year. The Explorer SUV was previously offered with a hybridized 3.3-liter liter V6, whereas the Aviator Grand Touring came with a hybridized twin-turbo 3.0-liter These powertrains won’t be available on the retail market anymore.

The iQ EV is a battery-electric four-seater city commuter car designed for car-sharing programs, in urban and campus environments; Toyota is targeting around 90 units for these applications. In ideal stop-and-go driving conditions, the 12 kWh Li-ion battery provides an estimated range of up to 50 miles on a full charge.

This started with a leased Fiat 500e used as my wife’s commuter car (she’s a registered nurse with a 10-mile commute each way). Our current fleet of alternative drivetrain vehicles includes two plug-in hybrids (a Subaru CrossTrek and a Chrysler Pacifica ) as well as my Mustang Mach-E.

The way the EPA vehicle standards are structured, the average of each automaker’s fleet (all of the light-duty vehicles manufactured in a given year) must meet targets of grams/mile of specified pollutants each year. The target amount of average tailpipe emissions gets a bit lower each year, resulting in progressively cleaner cars.
