Daimler Trucks & Buses, one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, aims to offer only new vehicles that are CO 2 -neutral in driving operation (“tank-to-wheel”) in the triad markets of Europe, Japan and NAFTA by 2039. Truly CO 2 -neutral transport only works with battery-electric or hydrogen-based drive.

Neste’s sustainable aviation fuel is produced from non-palm renewable and sustainable raw materials. Neste is increasing renewable jet fuel production volumes significantly over the course of the next few years. The fuel has been produced by Neste and supplied by Air BP to Caen Carpiquet (CFR/LFRK) airport in France.

In recent years, Scania has also delivered ethanol buses for commercial service in Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Norway and elsewhere. SL’s owner, the Stockholm County Council, has set a target that at least 50% of all passenger transport in its territory should occur using renewable fuels by 2012.

Scania has previously delivered ethanol- and biogas-fuelled vehicles to Keolis, and the new buses will be equipped with engines for the renewable fuels ethanol and rapeseed methyl ester (RME). The majority, 123 urban and suburban buses, will be used in the greater Stockholm area, where Keolis operates for Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL).

According to a new study by Bosch, the use of e-fuels—synthetic fuels based on renewable energy—in Europe by 2050 as a scheduled supplement to electrification could save up to 2.8 If the electricity used is generated from renewables (and thus CO 2 -free), such fuels are carbon-neutral and very versatile.
