Volvo has now confirmed that it will introduce a plug-in hybrid diesel car as early as 2012. The plug-in hybrid is expected to achieve CO2 emissions as low as 49g/km with fuel consumption at 124mpg. The diesel engine will be optimised to run on renewable synthetic diesel and it will comply with future exhaust emission [.].

Plans to introduce a full hybrid have been scrapped by Volvo – and in its place will be a series produced plug-in diesel hybrid. The vehicle, which will be introduced as early as 2012, will support a 31 mile all-electric range and for longer distances will turn to its diesel engine for a combined range of around 746 miles.

Volvo has called on the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to review the criteria for London Congestion Charge exemption. Volvo believe this principle is now unfair and outdated, and the statistics back up the claim. Hybrid-powered cars have CO2 outputs ranging from 89g/km to 219g/km, yet all are exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

Volvo has strengthened its DRIVe range by combining the DRIVe technologies with its sports-inspired R-DESIGN bodykit to offer C30, S40 and V50 models with low levels of emissions and the highest levels of visual appeal. Volvo believes the principal of hybrid cars being exempt from the charge is outdated. It’s easy to see why Volvo is so keen to point out the discrepancy.
