Volvo Cars and Northvolt have selected Gothenburg, Sweden to establish a new battery manufacturing plant which will commence operations in 2025, and complement the planned R&D center that both companies announced in December as part of an investment of approximately SEK 30 billion (US$3.3 Earlier post.).

Volvo Cars says that it is making significant investments that allow for the in-house design and development of electric motors for the next generation of Volvo models, as the company continues to move towards becoming a fully electric car maker. The newly opened electric motor lab in Shanghai became operational last month.

The 100% renewable electricity mix in Chengdu is the result of a newly signed supply contract and will reduce the plant’s CO 2 emissions by more than 11,000 tonnes per year. By 2040, Volvo Cars aims to be a climate-neutral company. These and other measures are part of the climate plan Volvo Cars launched late last year.

The cooperation includes exclusive, worldwide first pilot tests of a fully electric Volvo FH truck with gross combination weights up to 60 tons. ABB will provide two fast-chargers for Scania electric buses in Östersund, Sweden. The chargers are based on OppCharge , an open interface for the automated charging of electric buses from any manufacturer, and use a pantograph on the infrastructure to connect the bus to the charging point.
