Around the same time, General Motors will introduce the Chevrolet Volt, a vehicle able to go 40 miles on electricity before its small gasoline engine kicks in. In Berkeley, a town known for its environmental sensibility, one out of five cars sold today is a hybrid Prius. Battery-powered motors are more efficient than gasoline engines.

The majority of the vehicles are electric, with a small number being plug-in gasoline-electric hybrids. Toyota intends to lease the vehicles to existing Toyota Prius fleet customers including a mix of public bodies and private companies. Toyota and EDF Energy will deploy a trial of up to 20 Toyota Plug in Hybrid Vehicles (PHV).
