The target is showcasing the train to a global audience attending the COP26 conference in Glasgow in November. Our Rail Decarbonization Action Plan sets out to make our passenger railways emissions free by 2035, but to maximise our climate change ambitions, there is also a requirement to look at what we do with retired stock.

To start the conversation around these questions, I appointed the 2022 IEEE Ad Hoc Committee on IEEE in 2050. The committee explored plausible scenarios across IEEE’s range of interests and scanned for drivers of change within existing and emerging technology fields. According to the committee’s research, IEEE’s current structure, areas of interest, programs and services, and sources of funding are not likely to align well with the potential futures of the global environment. Expecting the future to be like the present overlooks weak signals of change and misses important potential signs for the future.
