The vehicle expands Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology with the introduction of a first generation lithium-ion battery that enables all-electric operation at higher speeds and longer distances than the conventional Prius hybrid. Building materials retailer Grange Builders Providers, of Baldoyle, Dublin, has purchased a Smith Newton truck for deliveries of building and DIY products. Designed for city and town center use, the Smith Newton is powered by an 80 kWh Li-ion battery pack and a 120 kW electric motor. Based in Tullamore, Co.

The eVito Taxi is powered by a 70 kW Zytek electric drive system, driving the front wheels through a custom designed Vocis/Graziano transmission. A 38 kWh Valence Li-Ion battery power pack installed in a weatherproof enclosure beneath the floor allows the internal space of the taxi to remain unaffected by the electric conversion.

The truck is a battery-powered, all-electric Smith Newton produced by SEV US and SEV UK with an aerial bucket integrated by Altec Industries Inc. PG&E will provide test data to SEV US and Altec for the creation of a production model. The Smith Newton is the world’s largest battery-electric-powered truck.

Weight and performance optimizations achieve a power output per liter of approx. 133 hp/l—the highest power output per liter of a Porsche naturally aspirated engine—which is significantly higher than that of the Carrera GT (106 hp/l). Consequently, less energy needs to be used for active cooling of the battery.
