The new zero-emission capable taxis being developed include both plug-in full series hybrid vehicles and full electric models. To date its one Achilles heel, particularly of older models, has been the pollution generated by chugging diesel engines. Around 3,000 of the most polluting taxis have also been removed from the London fleet.

Among the findings of the study, published as an open-access paper in the journal Environmental Research Letters , was that battery electric vehicles with large battery capacity can produce two to three times as much air emissions damage as gasoline hybrid electric vehicles, depending on charge timing. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley , found that between 2018 and 2022, CO2 emission from all sources (industries, homes, traffic) across the San Francisco Bay Area dropped around 1.8%
