DISCOVR project seeking high productivity algae to reduce cost of biofuels

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, with colleagues from Los Alamos, Sandia and NREL, are working to lower the cost of producing biofuels from algae. Determining strains of algae that are highly productive could help lower the cost of biofuel production. DISCOVR Project BETO peer review (March 2017).

Near-term: By 2017, verify at pilot scale at least one technology pathway for hydrocarbon biofuel production, demonstrating a mature modeled price of $3/gasoline gallon equivalent (gge) with GHG emissions reduction of 50% or more. Both components, working together, are necessary to mobilize sufficient quantities of cost-competitive biomass.

WPI team develops sandwiched liquid metal membrane for H2 purification as alternative to Pd; lowering costs for fuel cell vehicles

Green Car Congress

Hydrogen occurs naturally in the environment, but it is almost always chemically bound to other elements—to oxygen in water (H 2 O), for example, or to carbon in methane (CH 4 ). Many researchers have focused on bringing the cost of that hydrogen down by making better and thinner palladium membranes. —Ravindra Datta.

NETL Report Concludes CTL Plus Carbon Capture Results in Fuel with 5-12% Less Lifecycle GHG Than Petroleum Diesel; Modest Biomass Additions Lower GHG Further

Green Car Congress

Increasing the percentage of biomass in the feed further reduces the life cycle GHG emissions of the fuel, but also increases capital and operating costs due to the higher cost of biomass feedstock and reduced economies of scale, the NETL report notes.
