Panda Power Funds has financed the 1,124 megawatt Panda “Hummel Station” power plant—one of the largest coal-to-natural gas power conversion projects in the United States. The plant will be located at the site of the retired Sunbury coal-fired power plant near Shamokin Dam in Snyder County, Pennsylvania.

While the new power station will supply 260% more power than the coal plant it replaces, key air emissions will be reduced by approximately 97%. The Hummel Generating Station will also use 97% less water for cooling purposes than the retired coal-fired Sunbury plant.

The test production was carried out in HYBRIT’s pilot plant in Luleå and shows that it is possible to reduce iron ore with fossil-free hydrogen, instead of removing the oxygen with coal and coke. With SSAB’s conversion, we will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent in Sweden and 7 percent in Finland.

Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have analyzed the water consumption for transportation fuels in the United States using an extended lifecycle system boundary that includes the water embedded in intermediate processing steps. Increases in population, energy and food demand now strain previously abundant sources of water.

The report estimates consumption to have been more than 500,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 2016. Methanol, like ethanol, is an alcohol with inherent issues such as its solubility in water and corrosiveness. Consumption of MTBE and other derivatives in China was estimated at 230,000 b/d in 2016.
