The Saturn version of the two-mode plug-in hybrid at the Milford Proving Grounds. On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. GM also gave a tour of the pre-production area where we could see production-intent Chevy Volts being assembled.

Plug-in cars are inevitable. GM may be in bankruptcy but remains unwavering in its commitment to have the Volt in some showrooms by November 2010. The other carmakers domestic and foreign have less firm but well press-released plans for plug-ins. GM waxed hot and cold on the EV1. Will we get our money’s worth?

BMW has recognized that they simply teed up GM and Nissan to benefit from the MINI E experience. Will MINI E drivers be so loyal to BMW they'll forgo the opportunity to actually purchase a plug-in car? Over at GM , Bob Lutz says an all-electric Volt would be "technologically trivial." No word on when.

Toyota aims at the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles around 2015.
