Wärtsilä has more than half a decade’s experience with methanol, having converted the first of four engines on Stena Germanica to use the fuel in 2015. The Wärtsilä 32 engine has been a workhorse since the 1980s, with more than 5,300 engines delivered to the marine market and more installations on land.

The test cell’s support equipment (conditioned combustion air, cooling system, fuel mass flow measurement and exhaust system) was designed to comfortably support 7,000-hp engines. The first cell was completed in September and the second cell will be available in early 2015.
