EPA will fund: Verified Exhaust Control Technologies: up to 100% of the cost of eligible verified exhaust control technologies.

The latest analyses of A7 and A8 automobiles of model years 2010 through 2013 with V6 and V8 engines certified according to the EU5 emission standard have revealed that in certain situations, NO x emissions are between 20 and 100 percent above the limit. The cylinder heads have two-part water jackets for needs-based cooling.

One of the trucks was equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR); three were equipped with EGR and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device. All the engines comply with the future Euro VI emissions standard, which will be mandatory in the EU from 2013/14. The engines also feature a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system. The actuation of the engine’s intake and exhaust valves, which are arranged in parallel, is governed by two overhead camshafts.

BASF researchers have further developed the three-way conversion catalyst and optimized its cleaning effect. The new four-way conversion catalyst, FWC, is a technology for vehicles with gasoline engines. The catalyst removes the gaseous pollutants and now also solids such as particulates from the exhaust gas flow.
