Ford will begin offering an alternative-fuels engine prep package for its 6.8-liter Ford presented details of the conversion option, which will become available this fall and enables the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane (LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas), at the annual Ford Fleet Product and Business Conference in Dearborn.

Funding beyond 2009 is subject to annual appropriations. The University of Houston (Houston, Texas) has been selected for negotiation of an award for a project to develop coupled NO x storage and reduction, and SCR that enables a high conversion of NO x under the lean conditions typical to a diesel or lean burn gasoline engine.

Concern over pollutants in vehicle exhaust has led to the development of the catalytic converter, which is a key component of exhaust gas mitigation systems. One of the chief areas of concern is the cold-start period, in which the catalytic converter is below the light-off temperature and the conversion of emissions is low.
