According to the American Public Transit Association (APTA), alternative fuels and advanced hybrid drivetrains powered more than half of all transit buses in 2017 and 2018. In the ten-year period from 2008 to 2018, the share of conventional diesel buses dropped from 70% to 42%.

This $130-million dollar investment in CNG capacity for 2018 builds on previous UPS investments of $100 million dollars in 2016 and $90 million dollars in 2017. UPS will have invested more than $1 billion in alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles and fueling stations from 2008 through 2018.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has deployed 40 Nissan Altima Hybrids as the first alternative fuel vehicles to be used as marked and unmarked patrol cars in the Police Department’s fleet. After a year of monitoring the vehicles performance the Department will determine whether to further expand them into the fleet.

The order has operational directives for building and fleet management, electricity generation, water use, waste management and purchasing. Planning for agency fleet composition such that by 31 December 2020, zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) or plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) account for 20% of all new agency passenger vehicle acquisitions.

The proposal also includes the already established EU fleet wide targets for 2020/2021 of 95 g CO 2 /km for passenger cars and 147 g CO 2 /km for light commercial vehicles, both of which are based on the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test procedure. The 2030 target gives stability and long-term direction to keep up these investments.
