The EV Project began in October 2009 when ECOtality’s eTec was awarded a federal stimulus grant of nearly $100 million from the DOE, and will deploy 4,700 Nissan LEAF EVs for the three-year study. to test and certify eTec’s vehicle charging stations that will be used in the project.

This follows on from the recently announced collaboration with Volvo on the plug-in hybrid V70 demonstration vehicles being tested in Europe this fall, which also feature EnerDel lithium-ion batteries. European automakers are really setting the pace in terms of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle development.

Plug-in cars are inevitable. Nissan appears intent on opening up a market for mid-price range electric cars within two years. The other carmakers domestic and foreign have less firm but well press-released plans for plug-ins. President Obama has stated a commitment to 1 million plug-in cars by 2015. Here's my June column.
