As part of its new 3-year business plan , Sumitomo Metal Mining (SMM) will boost production of NCA ((lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide) materials for Li-ion cathodes, expanding from 1,850 tons/month to 2,550 tons/month (+38%). SMM is targeting supplying Tesla with the battery materials for the Model 3 being released next year.

Tesla has filed a patent that aims to recover undamaged and unutilized nickel and cobalt, two crucial raw materials in battery cells. The patent is titled “Metal Sulfate Manufacturing System via Electrochemical Dissolution” and was filed by three Tesla engineers. Musk’s callout for Nickel and Cobalt.

Panasonic has emerged as the leader thanks to its partnership with Tesla, capturing 39% of the plug-in vehicle battery market, overtaking NEC (27% market share) and LG Chem (9%) in 2013. Nonetheless, in terms of demand by OEM, hybrid leader Toyota (28%) edges EV providers Tesla Motors (24%) and Renault-Nissan (21%).

It is little wonder that Tesla CEO Elon Musk calls EV factories “ gigantic money furnaces.”. GM , Ford , Tesla and others have moved to secure batteries through 2025, but it could be tricky after that. Tesla is moving towards the use of lithium-iron phosphate batteries, as is Ford for some of its vehicles.
