Reminiscent of the TV show “ Shark Tank ,” on which business leaders often advise entrepreneurs, the students presented their projects to IEEE Pre-University Education Coordinating Committee volunteers, who provided feedback and guidance. There were two sessions on each of the three campuses. It “ignited his passion and expanded his horizons.”

Laker worked with the IEEE Board of Directors in the early 1990s to purchase personal computers for the organization’s leaders to make it easier to conduct IEEE business via the Internet. The US $10,000 scholarship is administered by IEEE Educational Activities and is payable over four years of undergraduate university study.

Students and members met with IEEE leaders, government officials, university professors, and industry executives. Students from several local schools and universities participated in the event. Unfortunately, physical contact with humans is something that robots find especially difficult and occasionally dangerous, so that we cannot (yet) safely use them as a proxy for nuanced physical contact with another person. When HuggieBot detects a user in its personal space, it opens its arms and invites the user in for a hug.
