The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the availability of $26 million in grant funding to establish clean diesel projects aimed at reducing emissions from the US’ existing fleet of diesel engines. Since the first year of the DERA program in 2008, EPA has awarded nearly 700 grants across the US.

Like the Recovery Act-funded projects, the annual Clean Cities projects include grants for vehicles, infrastructure, and education. The project will deploy 502 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles through 119 public and private fleets throughout the state. The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has selected 10 projects that will receive a share of $55 million in competitive grants that will help put a new generation of zero-emission buses on the road. Grants from the LoNo program help transit agencies integrate more of these advanced buses into their fleets.

The eStar all-electric truck transitioned from concept to reality in August 2009, when President Barack Obama visited Navistar’s manufacturing plant in Indiana to announce a $39.2 million federal stimulus grant to build electric trucks.

OptiFuel Systems, a system integrator of Cummins and BAE Systems hybrid power products for decarbonizing the rail, marine, and microgrid power market, is in the process of finalizing a $2.6 million US Department of Energy (DOE) grant to demonstrate a pre-production Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) hybrid 4,300 hp line-haul locomotive.
